Raman spectroscopy can be destructive. Avoid starting your scans with full intensity.
Bayleyite burns easily with the 20mW HeNe at full power through the 50x objective:
You should suspect specimen burning whenever you get a dark and flat spectrum.
It may be tricky to get a usable spectrum without damaging the specimen.
